Brownie Park – Public Meeting 19th March 3pm

The Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust and The Amenity Society have plans to develop the area known as the Brownie Park, opposite Cove Fire Station, as an amenity park planted with trees and shrubs.

On Sunday 19th March at 3p.m. the proposals will be explained in the Brownie Park and what help is needed.  We would urge anyone interested to come along and we welcome more ideas and suggestions.

Sea Change 2016 – June 17/18/19

Sea ChangeOn June 17/18/19 the Trust’s Arts Group will host our 5th annual Sea Change Festival bringing with it an array of vibrant colourful entertainment and a cast iron guarantee of blistering sunshine.

This year’s festival is designed around 2016 being Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

The programme for the weekend is still work in progress however, in the pipeline, are events such as a documentary and short film competition, a beach BBQ, a fancy dress parade on the Saturday morning from Kilcreggan Pier to Cove Burgh Hall (with prizes for best costume) , the return of the Mermaid’s Café, a lego home and spaces exhibition by pupils of Rosneath and Kilcreggan primary schools and an architectural heritage trail culminating with performances and a picnic at Craig Ailey.

We can also now confirm that Neil Baxter, director of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland,  has agreed to come and give a talk about the Year of Architecture on the Friday night.

It is already looking like a busy programme with there being more events to confirm.

We will keep people informed of the plans as events are firmed up over the coming weeks – in the meantime please pencil the weekend into your diary

Rosneath Peninsula Heritage Trail

The Trust is delighted to announce the launch of the Rosneath Peninsula Heritage Trail.

Craig AileyThe trail focuses on the West Coast of the Peninsula from Kilcreggan Pier to Peaton and guides you around some of the houses, churches and shops that continue to give Cove & Kilcreggan its enduring character.

The trail introduces you to 13 different locations of historic interest on the Peninsula providing a summary of its history. It also provides an interesting insight into the history of the area and an introduction to the notable architects whose buildings you will encounter on the trail including: Alexander Thomson, Campbell Douglas and James Chalmers.

Helensburgh Colour Canter – October 11th

colour canter finalThe Development Trust is delighted to announce the inaugural Helensburgh Canter which will take place on Sunday October 11th, 2015 at noon.

The Helensburgh Colour Canter is a 3.2 kms fun walk/jog/canter along Helensburgh promenade from the swimming pool to Kidston Park and back. Along the way there will be four bombing zones where runners will be bombarded with various colours. Runners, friends and relatives will be able to purchase minibags of colour to ensure the fun never stops. You start out all white and after 3.2kms of sheer enjoyment you end up all the colours of the rainbow.

The Helensburgh Colour Canter is organised to raise funds to build Craigrownie Play Park for the children of the Rosneath Peninsula.

There is a limit of 1,000 entrants with a closing date of 30th September 2015 for entry.

Auction and Dance – August 28th, CBH

Hi folks,

Craigrownie Park ProposalAll the plans are now finalised for the auction and dance night at Cove Burgh Hall on August 28th to raise funds for the Craigrownie Park Project.

The tapas, courtesy of La Barca, on the night will be:

  • chicken and chorizo paella
  • Spanish potato and onion omelette
  • beef tomato and goats cheese salad
  • tender beef and potato casserole with garlic and paprika

and the tables will have fresh bread and mixed marinated olives on them.

Entertainment will be provided by Harmonica Lewinsky , a five piece band who play a mix of Blues and old-fashioned R’n’B.

There will be cash bar on the night and wine will be served to tables by the bottle.

Most importantly we hope everyone has a great night and between us we can raise a nice sum of money to help the Craigrownie Park Project progress toward its target of £100,000 (which is not far away now).

 

Craigrownie Park Project

When the Trust was first formed we conducted an extensive Community Action Plan, ascertaining what residents on our peninsula felt was most lacking and what the community would benefit most from. This Community Action Plan can be seen via the Community Action Plan’ link on the left hand menu bar.

Outdoor play space was one of the top priorities for residents. Lack of any outdoor play space in our area has been painfully obvious for many years. In March 2014 The Craigrownie Park Group was formed within the Trust and we are now working in partnership with Argyll & Bute Council to reinstate Craigrownie Park.

Craigrownie Park Proposal

The children on the peninsula have been involved with the project from the beginning, drawing pictures and designing the park and creating our Craigrownie Park logo.  They have been present at all fundraisers and are genuinely engaged and excited with this process and the prospect at having a park on the peninsula. With 5% of the population now diabetic and those with diabetes and obesity in Scotland increasing faster than anywhere else in the UK, we want to do all we can to encourage the next generation to lead healthy, active lives.

We have had support from the MOD, Argyll and Bute Council, Police Scotland, local businesses, housing associations and generous individuals. Locally we have raised funds through sponsored bike rides, wellie walks, curry nights, car boot sales etc etc etc. In just over a year we have raised £63,000 of the £100,000 that is required to build the park. We are hoping to raise the outstanding £37,000 in time to have the park built by Easter 2016.

Refurbishing Craigrownie Park has proven to be a truly community project, receiving support from councillors to pensioners. This demonstrates the need for not just a space for children to play but a place where the community can meet and socialise. The design of the park is such that it can be enjoyed by all. At the centre of the park, with views down the Clyde estuary is a roofed octagonal seated area where everyone can sit in all weather. To the left is an enclosed toddler area, to the right a teenage area and adult gym equipment. The paths through out are tarmac and suitable for wheelchair users. There is a wheelchair accessible roundabout included too so the wheelchair bound children can play alongside their able bodied friends. Our local primary school have been very supportive and the P5/4 group are donating all the money raised from their Enterprise Topic to the project.

There are more events on the horizon including a curry night and possibly a dance and an auction later in the summer. At all these events we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who attend and donate and local businesses who provide raffle prizes or help with the arrangements for food and entertainment.

We are always looking for raffle prizes and innovative ways of raising money to help us get to our £100,000 target. Kilcreggan Beach Clean Sunday 29th March

Kilcreggan Beach needs your helping hands on Sunday 29th March to join Surfers Against Sewage in their three day quest to clean the beaches of the UK.

In 2014 over 3,250 volunteers removed 35 tonnes of rubbish from 135 beaches and SAS, with the help of local communities across the country, are looking to even better this year.

The plan for the day is to meet at 1030 at the benches across from the cafe in Kilcreggan to kick start the clean. The clean will be in from 1030 till 1430 and any help that you can provide at any point in this four hour window would be massively appreciated.

Note that under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Return of Samba Drumming

DRUMMING UP SUPPORT FOR SEA CHANGE

Cove and Kilcreggan’s samba troupe, formed last year to lead the parade at the annual Sea Change festival, is set to welcome new recruits of all ages, regardless of previous experience.

Suitable for  older children and adults, the drumming lessons will begin in Kilcreggan Primary School from 8 till 9pm on Thursday evenings from the 5th of February 2015.

Successful Sea Change Festival

The inaugural SEA CHANGE Arts Festival on the Rosneath Peninsula over the weekend of 8-10th June was a huge success. From the fully-booked opening night reception at Cove Park, where Jo Royle of “Plastiki” fame gave an inspirational talk, to the 120 folk who turned up on Sunday for the Poetry and Sea Shanties concert at Kilcreggan Pier, every event was enthusiastically supported.

One of the highlights was the 150 entries to the Noah’s Ark building competition from the children at Kilcreggan and Rosneath Primary Schools. Jo Royle selected the winners who were Ryan Barbour, Stephen Reid, and Ian David from Kilcreggan PS, and Jake Hannigan, Reece Arnold, Connor Wilkes, Cameron Stokes, and Callum Byles from Rosneath PS.

On Sunday morning over 60 of the boats were launched opposite Cove Burgh Hall. Few survived this experience and were regathered at the shore, although some had to be captured by the Royal Navy “guard rib” and Cove Sailing Club recorded that one stalwart entry crossed the Cove finish line at 11.32am.

Saturday’s fancy dress parade from Kilcreggan Pier to Cove Sailing Club was held in one of the weekend’s few sunshine windows and was much enjoyed by walkers and watchers alike. The Kilcreggan Youth Cafe won the group award, Eleanor Ironside wore the best costume, Annie Ferguson waved the best umbrella, Rohan Dunbar was best pirate, and Marianne McNeilage was an outstanding best mermaid.

The Poetry and Sea Shanty concert by Kilcreggan pier drew a large crowd. It was organised by Stephen Adam whose Peninsula Choir formed the core of the performances around which the accordion playing of Andrew Mortimer, and the atmospheric poetry readings by actors Veronica Ferguson, David Mullen, and Joyce Falconer provided a funny and moving decoration.

The Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust thanks all those who contributed to the Festival, from the sponsors, Argyll & Bute Council, and Babcocks to the Mermaid Tea Ladies, from the Fire Brigade and Police to the pipers and parade marshals, from Cove Film Club to the Royal Navy, and from all the performers to all those who attended the various events.
