Kilcreggan Beach Clean Sunday 29th March

Kilcreggan Beach needs your helping hands on Sunday 29th March to join Surfers Against Sewage in their three day quest to clean the beaches of the UK.

In 2014 over 3,250 volunteers removed 35 tonnes of rubbish from 135 beaches and SAS, with the help of local communities across the country, are looking to even better this year.

The plan for the day is to meet at 1030 at the benches across from the cafe in Kilcreggan to kick start the clean. The clean will be in from 1030 till 1430 and any help that you can provide at any point in this four hour window would be massively appreciated.

Note that under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Return of Samba Drumming


Cove and Kilcreggan’s samba troupe, formed last year to lead the parade at the annual Sea Change festival, is set to welcome new recruits of all ages, regardless of previous experience.

Suitable for  older children and adults, the drumming lessons will begin in Kilcreggan Primary School from 8 till 9pm on Thursday evenings from the 5th of February 2015.

Successful Sea Change Festival

The inaugural SEA CHANGE Arts Festival on the Rosneath Peninsula over the weekend of 8-10th June was a huge success. From the fully-booked opening night reception at Cove Park, where Jo Royle of “Plastiki” fame gave an inspirational talk, to the 120 folk who turned up on Sunday for the Poetry and Sea Shanties concert at Kilcreggan Pier, every event was enthusiastically supported.

One of the highlights was the 150 entries to the Noah’s Ark building competition from the children at Kilcreggan and Rosneath Primary Schools. Jo Royle selected the winners who were Ryan Barbour, Stephen Reid, and Ian David from Kilcreggan PS, and Jake Hannigan, Reece Arnold, Connor Wilkes, Cameron Stokes, and Callum Byles from Rosneath PS.

On Sunday morning over 60 of the boats were launched opposite Cove Burgh Hall. Few survived this experience and were regathered at the shore, although some had to be captured by the Royal Navy “guard rib” and Cove Sailing Club recorded that one stalwart entry crossed the Cove finish line at 11.32am.

Saturday’s fancy dress parade from Kilcreggan Pier to Cove Sailing Club was held in one of the weekend’s few sunshine windows and was much enjoyed by walkers and watchers alike. The Kilcreggan Youth Cafe won the group award, Eleanor Ironside wore the best costume, Annie Ferguson waved the best umbrella, Rohan Dunbar was best pirate, and Marianne McNeilage was an outstanding best mermaid.

The Poetry and Sea Shanty concert by Kilcreggan pier drew a large crowd. It was organised by Stephen Adam whose Peninsula Choir formed the core of the performances around which the accordion playing of Andrew Mortimer, and the atmospheric poetry readings by actors Veronica Ferguson, David Mullen, and Joyce Falconer provided a funny and moving decoration.

The Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust thanks all those who contributed to the Festival, from the sponsors, Argyll & Bute Council, and Babcocks to the Mermaid Tea Ladies, from the Fire Brigade and Police to the pipers and parade marshals, from Cove Film Club to the Royal Navy, and from all the performers to all those who attended the various events.

RPW CDT Annual General Meeting

The Trust’s first AGM was held at the Burgh Hall on 11th November. It has been a remarkable first eighteen months. Among the landmarks were the compilation and delivery of the Community Action Plan, the Kilcreggan Architectural Competition, the appointment of Martin Aldridge and Catherine Slavin as our carbon and energy reduction team, and the feasibility study and on-going pre-development work on our community windfarm. By the time this issue goes to press, we will also have held our Renewable Energy Exhibition in the Burgh Hall.

All these activities have been funded by grants, and we owe Arlene Cullum thanks for the huge effort she put into the many applications. Particular thanks are also due to Louise Young, who drew up our Constitution and negotiated our registration with Companies House and the Charities Regulator.

Three of our inaugural board, Brenda Collins, Laura Galbraith, and Andy Logue stood down this year. We are very grateful for their support and engagement on behalf of our community. The directors for 2012 are Ann Bray, Malcolm Brown, Annie Burden, Arlene Cullum, Alan Devenny, Neil Isaacs, Murdo MacDonald, Catriona McMurtrie, Paul Munro, Tony Page, Laurence Slavin, Grant Watkinson, and Louise Young.

Each of us would welcome any comments and suggestions on the future operation of the Trust.

May 7th, 2011 – Community Action Plan Unveiled

On Saturday May 7th at 2pm in the Burgh Hall, the Development Trust will will deliver the Community Action Plan which the community have  contributed to over the last six months. Project Groups have already started to consider how some of the projects emerging from the surveys and public meetings might be brought to fruition.

The creation of the Community Action Plan was only achieved through the assistance of Stephen Singer and his colleagues at Community Links Scotland. Their participation was funded by grants from Voluntary Action Fund, Argyll and Islands LEADER programme, Dunbritton Housing Association, Community Enterprise in Scotland, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, the Big Lottery Fund, and Community Energy Scotland.  The board also wish to pass on their appreciation to  Arlene Cullum, one of the Trust’s Vice-Conveners, who spent many weeks compiling our applications for funding

We would very much like to see a large turnout on Saturday 7th May to see the results of her, and your, efforts.

Alongside the presentation of the Community Action Plan, there will be five-a-side football in the Church Hall grounds, and the Board will be giving an update on the role of the Carbon and Energy Reduction Officer. She, or he, will be employed to give energy efficiency advice to every household in the community. This is part of our co-operation with the Climate Challenge Fund which is supporting the pre-development investigation on our Community Wind Power project.

Furthermore the Glasgow Institute of Architects, in conjunction with the Development Trust, is holding an architectural competition on the redesign of Kilcreggan Village centre. This prestigious event will take place through the summer and will include various events designed to ascertain the views of the community on the emerging plans. The final exhibition and prizegiving will be held in the Burgh Hall in August.

The Development Trust has come a long way in just a year and your support has been very much appreciated. Please come along on Saturday May 7th to participate in the next step of the journey.

Application to Climate Challenge Fund Successful

Those who attended the Public Meeting in the Burgh Hall in February will have heard that we were finalising our application to the Climate Challenge Fund to support pre-development work for our community wind turbine project. 

We recently received the great news that our application has been successful.

The wind farm pre-development work will involve anemometry, ornithology, environmental impact, and consultation with MOD, SNH, the National Park, Argyll & Bute Council, Civil Aviation Authority, and many other stakeholders before we reach the planning stage. It will take over a year and will also involve community consultation. So we still have a long way to go before even starting the development, but this funding is a huge step forward.

This planning application was a huge project in itself, and we owe a great deal to our two liaison officers, Jenny Brotchie at Climate Challenge Fund, and Iona McDonald at Community Energy Scotland, and to our Community Action Plan consultant Stephen Singer at Community Links Scotland.

The Rosneath Peninsula West CDT received nearly £250,000, which was the second highest award in all of Scotland. This represents an enormous step in the Trust’s ambitions to transform our community.

As part of this package we have also been awarded funding to employ a Carbon and Energy Reduction Officer (CERO) to work in our area to reduce household energy bills. The CERO will work for a year using a thermal imaging camera and wireless energy monitors to assist homes on the peninsula cut down on their bills.


Our next Public Meeting is on Saturday May 7th, at 2pm in the Burgh Hall when we will unveil the Community Action Plan, introduce our CERO and answer your questions on the wind project. 

A provsional timetable for the day is

2.00pm – 3.00pm Publication of Community Action Plan and questions on future plans.
3.00pm – 3.30pm Introduction of the CERO and outline of methodology.
3.30pm – 4.00pm Questions on wind energy technical study.

Launching the Trust

The Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust (RPW CDT) was registered as a company limited by guarantee on 15th June 2010 and was officially launched at a public meeting in Cove Burgh Hall on 6th November 2010. Our Purpose

Our purpose is to revitalise the communities of the villages of Coulport, Ardpeaton, Cove, Kilcreggan and Portkil. These villages lie within the area on the west side of the Rosneath Peninsula, from the watershed (the dividing spine) down to the shore, from 56°58′ North to 56°06′ North. As a registered charity, set up under the auspices of Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council, we will ensure that all the income of the Trust is distributed among these communities, with the aim of enabling any individuals and groups in the area to pursue a wide range of activities that benefit everyone who lives here.

The fifteen directors on the Trust’s Board represent a diverse cross-section of the community. Our Memorandum and Articles of Association describes the Trust’s constitution and structure. The full document can be accessed by clicking  here.


The Consultation Process

In order to ascertain the precise wishes and needs of the community, the Trust commissioned a Community Development Plan survey, which produced 361 returns, representing an excellent 28.5% of our adult population. Interim analysis highlighted interest in issues such as public transport, the Rainbow Centre, regeneration and tourism, with highest responses for:

• Affordable housing for young families
• Provision of petrol and diesel fuel
• Development of sporting and leisure facilities
• Improved nursery and creche facilities
• Access to sheltered housing
• Restoration of the foreshore and elimination of Japanese knotweed

How Will We Pay For All This?

Alongside the development plan, the Trust investigated a number of ways to obtain funding for these projects. One particularly promising area to emerge involved the installation of one or more wind turbines.
During a preliminary feasibility study, one suitable site was identified on the moorland at Knockderry Farm, north-east of the Barbour Road. The site is excellent in terms of the direction and strength of the prevailing wind, and of course any turbines located here will not be visible from the villages. This scheme would be run by the Trust, which means that every penny of income generated would go directly to the community.

The Next Stage

The results of our analysis will be refined by vote at a Public Meeting to be held on Saturday 26th February at Cove Burgh Hall. The meeting starts at 3 pm but the doors will be open between 2 pm and 5 pm, and members of the Trust will be on hand to answer any queries. The final report will be presented at Cove Burgh Hall on Saturday 7th May.

We also need to conduct a full Technical Feasibility Study for the wind farm, hopefully with financial backing from the Climate Challenge Fund, who will bring other energy-saving benefits to our homes. The recent community ballot was conducted to measure the level of support on this issue.
